On Monday April 4th, the planet Neptune moved into the sign of Pisces for the first time in 150 years. Neptune will turn retrograde in June and by August will move back into Aquarius for the following six months. On February 3rd, 2012 Neptune will re-enter Pisces for a thirteen year stay.
Neptune rules Pisces and is most at home there. The strong compatibility of Neptune and Pisces will expand our horizons and introduce new dimensions of consciousness. Consciousness itself will be a subject of particular interest during this time. Both Neptune and Pisces are associated with feelings of empathy and compassion as we feel more connected to the rest of humanity. We will become much more sensitized to the human condition, much of which is characterized by suffering. When confronted with the magnitude of human suffering, we have the choice between escapism or compassionate involvement.
Undoubtedly, during Neptune's transit of Pisces we will see escapism reach the level of an art form. As people become more and more uncomfortable with the world around them, some of them will seek refuge in drugs, alcohol, sex, and virtual reality. For the rest of us, the opportunity is to embrace the notion of One Human Family--that when one of us suffers, we all suffer to some extent. It will be a time to address the great inequities that exist in the world and reach out to those who are hungry, poor, sick, homeless, and jobless.
Quite likely there will be some extreme political polarization during this time between humanitarian inclined liberals and right wing conservatives determined to hang on to what they have, regardless of the cost to Planet Earth and its inhabitants.
Great strides will be made in the area of healing during this time as our intuitive faculties are activated by Neptune's transit of Pisces, and we begin to understand at a much deeper level what really makes us tick.
There is an enormous opportunity for spiritual growth during this time. Both Neptune and Pisces are associated with the "urge to merge", to find that mystical connection to the " Ocean of Being". All of the things that divide us--nationality, race, gender, age, economic status, political party, etc.--will be viewed from a different perspective, as we dive beneath the surface duality to seek the underlying oneness.
Perhaps the fact that Neptune is currently sitting on top of my natal Sun, and will be for the next couple of years, makes all of this a little more meaningful for me. I'm feeling some profound stirrings within. Of course, Neptune is also associated with fantasy and illusion, so I could just be in my own private Idaho.
One thing for sure, with all of this "urge to merge" energy around, our yoga practice should be interesting for the next fourteen years.

I have just recently realized how much I have wanted to escape reality the past few years and after starting to re-read Pema Chodren's book "When Things Fall Apart" understood that the more I ran, the more I would be chased. I'm glad to know that the universe will be supporting me as I stand my ground and embrace whatever comes my way. Thank you Timji - see you soon!
